Here is some information on the worst flood in San Diego’s history:
The Noachian Deluge of 1861-1862
In San Diego, rain fell for forty-three days, from Christmas of 1861 through January.
- Roads and dry washes became streams, streams, rivers. One dug a 50-foot deep arroyo at San Luis Rey.
- Others carried soil, boulders, trees, livestock, and water-logged adobe houses
- Derby’s Dike, which channeled the San Diego River to Mission Bay, broke, and all the lowlands from Mission Valley to Point Loma were underwater
- Throughout Southern California, an estimated 200 people and 200,000 head of cattle drowned
