Our local Mission Valley East team is a trusted leader in storm damage remediation services in Clairemont Mesa East. Residents have relied on us to restore their storm damage for many years. During the spring, we may encounter several types of weather events as follows:

Thunderstorms: While relatively infrequent, spring can bring isolated thunderstorms to the region, accompanied by lightning and occasional heavy rainfall.

Santa Ana Winds: Mission Valley and the surrounding areas can experience Santa Ana wind events in the spring. These are strong, dry winds that blow from the east or northeast, increasing the risk of wildfire spread due to their drying effect on vegetation.

Residents must stay informed about local weather forecasts and be prepared for these weather events, particularly the potential for Santa Ana winds and their associated fire risk. While the spring season in Clairemont Mesa East is generally mild, it's always a good idea to remain vigilant and prepared for unexpected weather changes.

Powerful Winter Storm Causes Property Damage in Allied Gardens?

2/27/2024 (Permalink)

High winds blow tree branches onto a car in a residential neighborhood. We restore storm damage 24 hours a day in San Diego.

Our local Mission Valley East team has been restoring storm damage in Allied Gardens for many years. While our region enjoys a mostly mild, pleasant climate, powerful storms do blow through, bringing heavy rain, high winds, thunder, and lightning. Storm damage can happen at any time of the day or night. Common storm-related damage includes:

Roof Damage: High winds and heavy rainfall can damage the roof, including missing shingles, leaks, and structural issues. These vulnerabilities may result in water intrusion and interior damage.

Flooding: Intense rainfall can overwhelm drainage systems, causing flooding in low-lying areas. Floodwaters can damage foundations, flooring, and electrical systems in homes.

Wind Damage: Strong winds, particularly during Santa Ana wind events, can cause structural damage, such as broken windows, damaged siding, or even detached roofs.

Fallen Trees and Debris: Falling trees or branches can damage roofs, vehicles, and structures. Debris carried by strong winds can also cause harm to residential properties.

Landslides and Erosion: Properties on steep hills or canyons are susceptible to landslides and erosion during heavy rain, potentially damaging foundations and landscapes.

Electrical Issues: Storms can lead to power outages, resulting in spoiled food, damage to electrical appliances, and inconvenience for residents.

Regular maintenance, securing loose objects, and having adequate insurance coverage, can help mitigate storm-related damage and ensure a quicker recovery process for homeowners in Allied Gardens.

Powerful Storm Causes Severe Damage to Tierrasanta Home?

1/30/2024 (Permalink)

A tree has fallen onto a house. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24 hours a day in San Diego.

Our Mission Valley East team is a trusted leader in storm damage mitigation and restoration services. Although Tierrasanta is known for its temperate climate, storms do come through that cause property damage. A tree falling onto a house during a rainstorm can cause significant damage. Here are some potential types of damage that can occur:

Structural Damage: A falling tree can damage a house's roof, walls, and foundation. It can create holes, cracks, or structural weaknesses that compromise the integrity of the building.

Roof Damage: The impact of a tree can puncture or collapse the roof, allowing rainwater to enter the house. This can lead to extensive water damage to the interior, including ceilings, walls, insulation, and personal belongings.

Broken Windows and Doors: Falling branches or the tree itself can break windows and doors, leaving the interior exposed to rain, wind, and debris.

Gutter and Siding Damage: Trees can damage gutters, downspouts, and siding, which can further contribute to water infiltration and exterior damage.

Electrical and Utility Disruption: If a tree falls on power lines or utility connections, it can disrupt electrical service, create a fire hazard, or cause gas leaks, posing additional risks.

Interior Water Damage: Rainwater entering the house can saturate floors, carpets, and furnishings, leading to mold growth, structural decay, and the need for extensive repairs.

What Are Some Signs That My Home in Serra Mesa Sustained Storm Damage?

12/27/2023 (Permalink)

Precipitation and moisture fog a window on a storm day. We are leaders in storm damage mitigation and restoration in San Diego.

Do you know how to tell if your home has storm damage? Sometimes storm damage is not obvious, so it's always a good idea to inspect your home for signs of storm damage after any severe weather event. Our local Mission Valley East team offers these tips for identifying storm damage:

Leaks and Water Intrusion

Inspect the interior of your home for any signs of water intrusion, such as wet or discolored spots on ceilings and walls.

Foundation Problems

Examine the area around your home's foundation for any signs of erosion, cracks, or settling. Proper drainage is crucial to prevent water from seeping into your foundation.

Window and Door Seals

Check the seals and caulking around windows and doors for any gaps or damage that could allow water to enter your home. Replace or repair any damaged seals.

Yard Drainage

Evaluate your yard's drainage system to ensure that water is not pooling near your home's foundation. P

Mold and Mildew

Look for signs of mold or mildew growth, especially in areas that may have been exposed to moisture.

Heavy Rain Causes Water Intrusion Issues in Mission Valley Home?

12/19/2023 (Permalink)

Rainwater from a recent storm floods a driveway. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24 hours a day in San Diego.

Our local Mission Valley East team is a leader in storm damage mitigation and restoration services. Heavy rainfall can cause water intrusion issues for several reasons:

Excessive Rainfall: During heavy rain events, surplus water can accumulate on the ground surface and seek alternative pathways, including infiltrating buildings and structures.

Saturation of Soil: Prolonged heavy rainfall saturates the soil, reducing its ability to absorb additional water. When the soil is already saturated, rainwater runs off more quickly, increasing the likelihood of surface water pooling and infiltrating buildings.

Inadequate Drainage: In some areas, drainage systems may not be equipped to handle the volume of water produced during heavy rains. Clogged storm drains, insufficiently sized culverts, or blocked channels can restrict the efficient flow of rainwater, causing it to back up and potentially enter structures.

Poorly Maintained Infrastructure: If infrastructure like roofs, windows, and foundations are not properly maintained or sealed, heavy rains can exploit vulnerabilities, allowing water to seep into buildings. Leaky roofs, deteriorated seals, or cracked foundations can provide pathways for water intrusion.

Topography: The slope and topography of an area can influence the movement of rainwater. Low-lying areas or locations with inadequate grading can become prone to water intrusion, as runoff can collect and flow toward structures.

What Kinds of Storms Can I Expect to Hit Mission Valley This Winter?

11/27/2023 (Permalink)

A palm tree is blown over during a storm. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24 hours a day in San Diego.

While Mission Valley experiences some winter storms each year, it generally has a mild and temperate climate, making it a popular destination for those seeking to escape harsh winter conditions in other parts of the country.

Our local Mission Valley East team responds to storm damage emergencies every year, and while our winters are typically characterized by relatively mild temperatures and an overall pleasant climate, there are a few types of storms and weather patterns that can occur during the winter in San Diego:

Rainstorms: Winter in San Diego is the rainy season. The region typically receives most of its annual rainfall between November and March. These rainstorms can vary in intensity, but they are generally not as severe as the storms in other parts of the country.

Santa Ana Winds: Occasionally, during the winter months, San Diego can experience Santa Ana winds. These are strong, dry winds that blow from the east and can lead to increased fire danger, especially in the region's dry brush and canyons.

Pacific Storms: San Diego can also be affected by Pacific storms during the winter, which may bring periods of heavier rain and gusty winds. However, these storms are usually not as intense as the winter storms that impact other parts of the United States.

Mission Valley Community Is Planning for Disasters and Emergencies?

9/19/2023 (Permalink)

A person takes inventory of emergency supplies and checks them off of a list. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24 hours a day in San Diego.

Our local Mission Valley East team wants everyone to be prepared for an emergency or disaster situation, and so does the Federal Emergency Management Agency! Each September is set aside as National Preparedness Month, a month devoted to helping people and communities to effectively plan for and manage disasters and emergencies.

This year the focus is on ensuring that older adults have access to support and resources during and after a disaster or emergency. Older adults may live in isolation, and require medications, and support from caregivers and others in the community. When individuals and communities are prepared, they become better equipped to handle emergencies, which reduces the burden on first responders and emergency services.

National Preparedness Month serves as a reminder of the importance of being prepared for disasters and emergencies. By raising awareness, promoting education, and encouraging proactive actions, this campaign empowers individuals, families, and communities to enhance their readiness and resilience. It is crucial for everyone to take part in this collective effort to ensure the safety and well-being of ourselves and those around us when faced with unexpected events.

Home in Mission Valley Damaged by Flying Debris?

7/11/2023 (Permalink)

Storm clouds approaching before a tropical storm. We are leaders in storm damage restoration services in San Diego.

Our local Mission Valley East team is trained and certified to restore wind damage, no matter how extensive the damage may be. Mission Valley is known for its lovely climate, but powerful winds do blow in throughout the year from various sources. In San Diego County, there are many types of winds that can impact us. Here are some wind definitions from the National Weather Service:

Coastal Winds

Coastal winds come from large storm systems moving onshore. One example would be the winds that are generated by tropical storms that reach us during the Pacific Hurricane Season. Homes and businesses may be damaged as these winds topple trees, powerlines, and erode beaches.

Frontal Winds

Frontal winds can sustain wind speeds of over 40 miles per hour and occur at the boundary between two different air masses. The stronger the pressure gradient, the stronger the wind. Counterclockwise winds blow around a low, making these winds chilly.

Santa Ana Winds

Santa Ana winds are hot, dry, and powerful winds associated with high-pressure systems that occur in Southern California during the fall and winter seasons. They form inland and blow toward the coast and can quickly dry out vegetation, making fuel for wildfires. These powerful winds have overturned trucks and other vehicles on freeways.

Our use of powerful, industrial-grade equipment allows us to quickly extract the bulk of the water and thoroughly dry the compromised areas. Here are some tips from Federal Emergency Management Agency on things you can do to stay safe during a flood:

  • If told to evacuate, evacuate immediately. Never drive around barricades. Local responders use them to safely direct traffic out of flooded areas.

Santa Ana Wind Damage in Mission Valley?

12/20/2022 (Permalink)

A roof is shown with a wind-damaged shingle. We are trusted leaders in storm damage restoration services in San Diego.

Last month powerful Santa Ana wind gusts blew through San Diego County. Our local Mission Valley East team responded to wind damage calls in Mission Valley, and some damage could have been prevented by taking a few precautions. Here are some tips for protecting your property from wind damage from the Federal Emergency Management Agency:

Fortify Your Roof

Your roof is your first line of defense in a high-wind event. Re-adhere any loose shingles and consider impact-resistant shingles when installing a roof. Install roof strappings to anchor the roof framing to the wall framings so the wind can’t lift your roof off your house.

Seal Cracks and Gaps

Prevent wind or water from coming in. Make sure caulking around windows and doors is in good shape and not cracked, broken, or missing. Fill any holes or gaps around pipes or wires that enter your building with a waterproof sealant.

Anchor Any Fuel Tanks and External Utility Links

If you have an exterior fuel tank or utilities located outside, anchor or tie them down according to the ground anchor instructions. This will help reduce the risk of them overturning and sliding.

The plan  contains sections to list emergency contact information, a worksheet for preparing an evacuation plan, a page for noting the locations of your home’s utilities, and how to shut them off.

Wind Advisory Issued for Serra Mesa?

6/14/2022 (Permalink)

Palm tree fronds are blown over during a strong wind gust. We restore storm damage - no matter how big the job is - in San Diego!

Last month a wind advisory was issued for many parts of San Diego County. Our local team in Mission Valley responds to property damage emergencies caused by winds every year in Serra Mesa. Here are some tips from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for protecting your home from wind damage:

Secure Fencing, Porches, Canopies, and Sheds

Have them inspected and make sure they are firmly attached and in sound structural condition. Secure any parts of fencing that appear weak or loose.

Replace Gravel and Rock Landscaping Materials

Rock and gravel materials can cause serious damage during a severe wind event. Gravel has been found in mailboxes during very strong wind events and has even shredded vinyl siding. Replace these materials with a softer material, such as mulch or dirt.

Trim or Remove Dead, Damaged, or Rotting Trees and Limbs

High winds can cause trees and branches to fall. Make sure any damaged trees on the property are trimmed or removed regularly. Your home should be at least a full-grown tree’s height away from the base of any tree, usually about 40 feet away.

Secure Objects Outside the Home

Loose shingles, your dog’s house, trash cans, and sports equipment can be picked up by the wind and cause damage to your home. Secure outdoor objects like furniture, gutters, and downspouts.

SERVPRO® of Mission Valley East responds to storm damage emergencies throughout the year in Allied Gardens.

Here are some tips for protecting your roof from strong winds from State Farm Insurance:

  • Strong winds can cause shingles to peel off, especially if edge shingles are not well secured or the adhesive on their tabs has failed
    • A roofing professional can evaluate your roof, and if needed, additional roofing cement can be added under each tab to help keep the shingles attached during a high-wind event
  • The shingles should be attached to roof decking of solid 5/8-inch-thick plywood
  • The roof decking should be attached to the roof framing using eight diameter ring shank nails and a secondary water barrier created by installing self-adhering flashing tape over the joints in the roof deck
  • For greater resistance to wind uplift, apply a bead of construction adhesive along both sides of the intersection between the roof decking and the rafters or trusses. Your roofing professional can provide you with information about additional safeguards.

The San Diego River runs behind this huge shopping mall and although it doesn’t happen very often, the river does flood on occasion making the perfect conditions for San Diegans to get out their kayaks and take them for a paddle down Fashion Valley Road!

Storm Damage in the U.S.

According to the Insurance Information Institute, (III), between 2014 and 2018, property damage claims for wind and hail damage averaged $11,200 per claim while claims for water damage and freezing came in averaging around $10,849 per claim for the same period. For instance, high winds and heavy rains may have damaged your roof shingles. Rain gutters may need to be repaired and cleaned. Unprecedented Rainfall Brings Fuel for Wildfires

Prepare for Storms

3/4/2020 (Permalink)

heavy rain on cyclist When heavy rains cause a lot of damage, SERVPRO of Mission Valley East is Here To Help.

San Diego seems to have only two kinds of weather: perfect or scary. SERVPRO® of Mission Valley East offers these tips to prepare for storms and floods. For more detail, see the Metro web site for storm emergencies or the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) guide for business owners.

Preparation Notes for San Diego

  • Have an evacuation route and a set meeting place that everyone knows how to reach
  • Move trash cans, debris, or other materials away from storm drains
  • Register with the power companies if a family member relies on on powered equipment (such as respiratory aids)
  • Make easily-located emergency kits for people and pets
  • Business owners/managers need to have the numbers of their suppliers
  • Check whether your property is in a flood zone

Storms can lead to water damage with or without flooding. Even a small amount of water allows the rapid growth of mold, and both water damage and mold get more severe very rapidly. SERVPRO of Mission Valley East promises to be Faster to any size disaster for that reason; we aim to mitigate mold damage before it gets worse, restore storm or water damage, and prevent further damage.

When fire and water take control of your life, we help you take it back. Call us at 619-303-3599.

Preparing for storms in San Diego

12/10/2019 (Permalink)

When storms are brewing, we may not think destruction is headed our way but sometimes the inevitable happens in San Diego. While storms can be beautiful, they can turn deadly in just moments. Being prepared will help minimize harm to people and bring less damage to your property. If you find yourself in the aftermath of a storm, let SERVPRO of Mission Valley East turn your chaos back to normal.

A few ways to prepare for a storm with strong winds are:

  •     Have a flashlight readily available in case of a power outage
  •     Board up windows and doors ahead of time, if possible
  •     Secure loose items
  •     Have an emergency kit ready including non-perishable foods and water
  •     Make a plan ahead of time so your family will know what to do

Your local meteorologists will monitor the weather conditions in your area keeping you informed on what type of storm is happening. A storm Watch indicates they are watching for formations of specific types (flooding, severe thunderstorms, hail, tornadoes, etc.)  A storm Warning means there are property and life-threatening conditions occurring so you should take precautions.

Once the storm has subsided in San Diego, please continue to be careful walking about your structure as there could be loose debris, and compromised structures, etc. Wear boots, and gloves to help protect yourself but above all call the professionals at SERVPRO of Mission Valley East to make your loss “Like it never even happened.”

Thunderstorm preparedness in Mission Valley East

12/9/2019 (Permalink)

Lighting striking through the sky Although you Cannot Prevent Thunderstorms, you Can Prepare for Them.

Thunderstorms are beautiful, but they can also be dangerous.  They can cause severe damage to your home and property in Mission Valley East. Thunderstorms include lightning and can:

  • Include winds over 50 MPH
  • Create hail
  • Cause flash floods
  • Cause tornadoes

In most places, a thunderstorm can happen at any time of the year and at any time of the day.

SERVPRO® of Mission Valley East  knows you cannot prevent a thunderstorm, but you can prepare:

  • Know the risk for thunderstorms in Mission Valley
  • Sign up for your community’s warning system
  • Cut down or trim trees that may fall on your home or office
  • Install surge protectors, lightning rods, or a lightning protection system

SERVPRO of Mission Valley East repeats the warning, “When thunder roars, go indoors”.  You don’t have to wait for the thunder. If there is a thunderstorm warning, go inside. Once there:

  • Unplug appliances
  • Do not use landline phones in office or home
  • Pay attention to alerts and warnings

If you can’t get inside a building:

  • If you are swimming or in a boat, get to land immediately.  Find shelter
  • If you are in a car, don’t touch anything metal
  • “Turn around. Don’t Drown. '' Avoid flooded roads. 6 inches of moving water can knock you down. One foot of moving water can sweep away your car.

A lightning strike during a thunderstorm can leave a wake of destruction in its path. This can range from minor electrical issues to fire damage. Lightning is also a major cause of injury or death from weather-related dangers.  Most people survive being hit by lightning, but they often have long-term problems.
